How We Treat
Comprehensive Physical Therapy Services available in Lewistown, MT
At Lewistown Physical Therapy and Wellness, we believe in treating patients as whole beings, and our comprehensive approach to outpatient physical therapy considers the mind and body as we utilize diverse, innovative physical therapy services to map out a path to recovery.
Each patient receives a personalized treatment plan that suits their unique needs and goals and involves one or more of these therapeutic methods:
Manual Therapy
Manual therapy is a hands-on therapy that involves mobilization of the affected muscle or joint to relieve muscle tension, reduce pain, and improve range of motion. This technique is a core practice in physical therapy and has branched into various specialized methods that focus on specific areas of the body. Manual therapy boosts blood circulation, and resets both the nervous and muscular systems, and is an effective treatment for most all patient presentations.
We also offer the following specialized manual therapy treatments:
-
Joint Mobilization
a hands-on approach to guide joints through appropriate movement patterns to reduce pain, increase range of motion and increase lubrication within the joint space.
-
Mobilization with Movement
A Mulligan approach where joint mobilization techniques are performed while taking patients through complimentary movements.
-
Manual Traction
This involves hands on techniques to distract joint spaces to reduce pain and restore mobility. Can be performed at distal joints or at the spinal level to reduce pressure placed on discs.
-
Pelvic Floor Assessments
an option for some female patients to best understand their pelvic floor and its function. Resting muscle tone, strength, endurance and functional use can be assessed as well as pelvic organ prolapse.
-
Neural Manipulation
A precise and gentle approach that aims to improve a trapped nerve’s mobility, helping it glide more smoothly against surrounding tissues, such as bones, muscles and tendons. Trauma, inflammation, poor posture and scar tissue are common causes of reduced nerve mobility.
-
Craniosacral Therapy
A gentle approach that targets the central nervous system and includes light touch stimulation on the head, neck, sacrum and spinal column. It’s ideal for treating headaches, migraines, whiplash, stress-related tension, and plagiocephaly (misshapen head).
Therapeutic Exercise
Exercise can build strength, endurance, power/speed, and improve flexibility/mobility in muscles and joints, and becomes therapeutic once our team of experts create a plan specific to your body’s needs. Therapeutic exercise in physical therapy often includes:
Stretching, stability, strength, aerobic and endurance activities
Coordination exercises
Relaxation and breath control
Improving range of motion
Learning movement patterns
Functional Dry Needling (FDN)
We are the leading providers of functional dry needling in Lewistown, which offers pain relief and resetting of the neuromuscular system. This can reduce muscle tension or optimize muscle performance, depending on what the body needs. During the FDN treatment, the clinician inserts a thin filament needle into specific muscles, targeting trigger points to increase blood flow to the affected area to promote healing and re-educate the neuromuscular system.
Canalith Repositioning
A technique to correct otoliths, (better known as “the crystals in the ear”) when they have shifted into the incorrect semicircular canal. This will resolve a common type of Vertigo, known as Benign Paroxymal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). The technique is known as the Epley Maneuver.
Neuromuscular Re-Education:
This approach to physical therapy re-teaches your brain and body to work together and improves balance, body awareness, spatial awareness, vertigo, eye stabilization, and reduces the risk of falling.
Therapeutic Activities
With this training patients are guided by a physical therapist to return to normal daily activities that may become challenging post operatively or with some neuromuscular disorders. Examples of these daily activities may include transferring from bed to chair, bed mobility, and moving from sit to stand, etc.
Gait Training
Our experts will closely analyze gait patterns that have become dysfunctional and painful, to restore better walking or running mechanics.
